How Much Does 3PL Fulfilment Cost in the UK? 2026 Guide
01/10/2026
How much does 3PL fulfilment cost UK brands? In short: from around £0.70 per order for pick and pack, plus storage for the space you actually use and the courier cost per parcel. But the headline rate is only one of six cost components, and the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest total.
This guide breaks 3PL fulfilment cost in the UK down into its building blocks, shows what typical rates look like in 2026, and flags the hidden charges that catch founders out. By the end, you will be able to compare any two quotes like for like. If you are new to the concept, start with our plain-English explanation of what a 3PL is.
The six building blocks of 3PL fulfilment cost
Almost every 3PL quote is made up of the same six components. Understanding each one is the key to comparing providers fairly:
Goods-in and receiving: the fee for unloading, checking and booking your stock into the warehouse, often charged per pallet or per delivery.
Storage: charged by the pallet, shelf or cubic metre per week or month. You should only ever pay for the space you actually use. Our guide to warehouse storage for growing brands explains the options in detail.
Pick and pack: the core per-order fee for picking items from shelves, packing them securely and preparing the parcel. This is the number most brands compare first; see how pick and pack services are priced before you judge any quote.
Packaging materials: boxes, mailers, tape and void fill. Some 3PLs include standard materials in the pick fee, while others charge per item used.
Courier and delivery: the cost of the parcel itself, which depends on weight, size, destination and service level.
Returns handling: receiving, inspecting and re-stocking returned items, usually charged per return processed.
When a quote seems confusing, ask the provider to map every fee to one of these six. Anything that does not fit deserves a hard question.
What do UK brands typically pay?
Rates vary by provider, location and volume. These are rough industry ranges UK eCommerce brands commonly see in 2026, not quotes:
Pick and pack: from around £0.70 per order for standard single-item orders at the competitive end. At Storage and Logistic, pick and pack starts from £0.70 per order, with label service at £0.25 per order and additional picks at £0.40 per extra item.
Storage: roughly £5 to £15 per pallet per week depending on location and volume, with smaller shelf-based pricing available for lighter stock.
Receiving: often £5 to £25 per pallet, although some providers include a monthly allowance.
Courier: depends entirely on weight and service level, but a 3PL's negotiated carrier rates are usually lower than what a small brand pays when booking direct.
Worked example: when the cheaper quote costs more
This is the single most useful calculation in 3PL pricing. Consider two hypothetical providers. Illustrative example: the providers and rates below are invented for the maths.
Provider A: £0.70 per order, no monthly minimums.
Provider B: £0.50 per order, plus a £200 monthly account fee.
Assumptions: single-item orders, identical storage and returns costs, no other fees.
At 500 orders a month, Provider A costs 500 x £0.70 = £350. Provider B costs 500 x £0.50 + £200 = £450. The "cheaper" headline rate costs £100 more.
At 2,000 orders a month, Provider A costs £1,400. Provider B costs £1,000 + £200 = £1,200. Now Provider B wins by £200.
The crossover point is where 0.70n = 0.50n + 200, which gives n = 1,000 orders a month. Below about 1,000 orders, the no-minimum quote wins; above it, the lower per-order rate wins. Always compare the true monthly total for your volumes, not the headline pick rate.
Hidden charges to watch for
These are the fees that turn a competitive quote into an expensive surprise:
Monthly minimums or account management fees that apply even in your quietest months.
Long-term storage surcharges for stock that sits unsold for too long.
Label and documentation fees added to every single order.
Packaging markups far above wholesale cost.
Charges for basic customer service, like investigating a tracking query.
Peak-season surcharges buried in the small print of the contract.
Before you sign anything, ask for a sample invoice based on 500 of your typical orders. An honest provider will produce one without hesitation.
How to compare 3PL quotes like for like
Build a simple spreadsheet using your real numbers: monthly order volume, average items per order, pallets currently in storage, and your return rate. Run each quote through the same scenario and compare the true monthly total, not the headline pick rate.
Ask every provider the same four questions: what exactly is included in pick and pack, what counts as an extra pick, how is storage measured and billed, and what do I pay in my slowest month? The provider with the clearest answers is usually the one with the fairest pricing.
Five ways to keep your fulfilment costs down
Reduce items per order with smart product bundling.
Keep slow-moving stock lean to cut your storage bill.
Use standard packaging sizes to avoid volumetric courier surcharges.
Send accurate inbound forecasts so receiving stays smooth and cheap.
Choose a 3PL with no fixed contracts, so you never pay for capacity you do not need.
Small operational habits compound quickly. A brand shipping 1,000 orders a month that trims 20p per order saves £2,400 a year (1,000 x £0.20 x 12).
