Pallet Storage in the UK: Costs, Sizes and How to Choose
01/10/2026
Pallet storage means renting warehouse space by the pallet: your goods sit on pallets in racking or block storage, and you pay per pallet per week for the space they occupy. It is the simplest form of commercial storage in the UK, and for any business holding bulk stock, it is usually far cheaper and more flexible than leasing a warehouse unit.
This guide explains what counts as a pallet space, the standard UK pallet sizes, how providers measure and bill storage, what affects the price, and how to choose a storage partner. For the wider picture, including shelf storage, bulk floor storage and flexible contract terms, see our broader guide to warehouse storage for growing brands.
What counts as a pallet space?
A pallet space is one pallet footprint in the warehouse, including the height allowance above it. Providers bill standard rates against standard sizes, so knowing the dimensions matters:
UK standard pallet: 1200mm x 1000mm footprint, the most common size in British warehousing.
Euro pallet: 1200mm x 800mm footprint, common for European supply chains.
Height: most standard rates assume a loaded height of around 1 to 1.2 metres. Taller pallets may be charged as more than one space, or quoted separately.
Oversized, double-stacked or unusually heavy pallets fall outside standard pricing. Always confirm how your provider classifies non-standard pallets before you commit, because this is a common source of billing surprises.
How pallet storage is measured and billed
The standard UK model is refreshingly simple: a price per pallet per week. But the details of the measurement decide what you actually pay:
Occupied pallets vs racking slots: fairer providers charge only for pallets physically stored. Some charge for the slot whether it is full or not. Ask which model applies.
Billing frequency: weekly billing means your invoice drops as soon as pallets ship out. Monthly billing can leave you paying for space you freed weeks ago.
Minimum charges: some providers set a minimum number of pallets or a minimum weekly charge. With no minimums, you can store five pallets as easily as five hundred.
In and out handling: moving pallets in and out of racking is usually charged per movement, separately from storage. Industry guides commonly quote a few pounds per pallet per movement, so factor this in if your stock turns over quickly.
Always ask for the definition in writing: what exactly counts as one pallet space, how height and weight limits work, and what triggers an extra charge.
Racked vs bulk pallet storage
Pallets are stored in one of two ways, and the right choice depends on your stock:
Racked storage: pallets sit in steel racking, each individually accessible by forklift. Best for varied stock where you need to pull specific pallets quickly. This is the standard for eCommerce and wholesale.
Bulk or block storage: pallets are stacked directly on the warehouse floor, often several high. Cheaper per pallet, but only practical for large quantities of identical stock, since reaching the bottom pallets means moving the ones on top.
Most businesses use racked storage for the accessibility. Bulk storage suits single-product importers holding deep quantities of the same goods.
What affects the price of pallet storage?
Industry guides commonly quote roughly £2 to £10 per pallet per week for standard ambient storage in the UK, with the exact figure moving on these factors:
Location: storage near London and the South East costs more than in the Midlands or the North.
Volume: providers typically discount for larger quantities, since full racks are more efficient to manage.
Duration and commitment: long-term agreements can reduce the rate, but weigh that against the flexibility of no fixed contracts if your volumes swing.
Access frequency: pallets that move in and out constantly cost more in handling than pallets that sit for months.
Special requirements: food-grade, temperature-controlled or high-security storage commands a premium over standard ambient racking.
These are rough market guides, not quotes: the only number that matters is the one on your provider's written quote.
Worked example: what 40 pallets cost for a year
Hypothetical example with stated assumptions. Assumptions: a business stores 40 standard pallets all year at an illustrative rate of £5 per pallet per week, inside the guide range above. Stock turns over steadily: 10 pallets a week are moved in or out, at an illustrative £2.50 handling charge per movement. No minimum charges.
Storage: 40 pallets x £5 x 52 weeks = £10,400 a year
Handling: 10 movements a week x £2.50 x 52 weeks = £1,300 a year
Illustrative annual total: £11,700
Two lessons fall out of the maths. First, handling is a meaningful share of the total when stock turns fast: over a tenth of the bill here. Second, a provider with slightly higher storage but lower handling fees can be cheaper overall for high-turnover stock. Always compare the full-year total, not just the headline pallet rate.
Access and turnaround: the questions most buyers forget
Price gets the attention, but access decides whether the storage actually works for your business. Ask:
What are the access hours, and can I get pallets out at short notice?
What is the turnaround from request to pallet ready for collection or dispatch?
How do I book pallets in and out: phone, email, or an online system?
If my pallets feed an order fulfilment operation, can storage and pick and pack run from the same warehouse?
That last point matters more than most buyers realise. When storage and fulfilment sit together, stock flows straight from rack to packing bench with no transfers between sites. Our guide to 3PL fulfilment costs in the UK breaks down how the combined economics work.
Choosing pallet storage: quick checklist
Use this before you sign anything:
A clear written definition of what counts as one pallet space, including height and weight limits.
Charging for pallets physically stored, not empty racking slots.
Weekly billing reconciliation, so the invoice falls as stock ships out.
Transparent in and out handling charges, quoted per movement.
No fixed contracts or long lock-in unless the discount genuinely justifies it.
Access hours and turnaround times that fit how your business actually operates.
Combined fulfilment available in the same warehouse, if you sell direct to customers.
A straightforward quote with every charge itemised, not a headline rate with extras.
The right pallet storage should feel invisible: pallets arrive, they are booked in and put away, and they come back out exactly when you need them. If you are comparing full fulfilment partners rather than storage alone, our fulfilment centre buyer's checklist gives you ten points to score them against.
